Explain why the definite integral from -4 to 4 of the function f(x)=x3+4x has a value of 0

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

There are such functions that are called odd functions, you know what they are?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@terenzreignz no i dont

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

An function f(x) is odd if f(-x) = -f(x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so my function is not odd correct?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

f(x) = x^3 + 4x Why don't you check f(-x) and find out? ^.^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

an odd fuction is a function in which the leading power( the highest one) is an odd number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is the easiest way to see it. also note that if there are terms multiplying you must first multiply them in order to see what the highest power is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now go back to your function is it odd?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so now since its odd you know that half of it is going to be under the x axis and the other half is going to be above it, refer to the x^3 graph
