hey can someone please help me to find out Which statement about an outlier is true? a.) An outlier is always near another data value. b.) An outlier can also be the median of the data. c.) An outlier can also be the minimum of the data. d.) Every set of data must have an outlier.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

a) is not always true because outliers are usually on their own far away from the group

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

b) is definitely false because again outliers are far from the group and aren't found in the middle of the data set

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

now I'll ask you this does every data set have an outlier?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

All the real data sets I have seen so far had outliners

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what about data sets that have points that are tightly grouped together?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no one point is off on its own

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do data sets like that have outliers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope so that one is false too so its c :D

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yep it's definitely C

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and it turns out that a min could be an outlier since the min could be on it's own far from the rest of the group

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks Jim :D

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
