It was definitely wrong for Tom to hide Jim's freedom from Huck. It's another example of Tom's immaturity. He sees it as an adventure, and does not see it as wrong.

Some critics have argued that Jim at the end of the book is in the same position as many African Americans after the end of the Civil War: technically free but not yet truly free
