Need some help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Looking for some help. I know I have to foil but I am unsure of what order do complete everything. 25(v + 1)^2 - 10=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You don't need to expand the bracket at all. You can just get the brackets on their own and then take square roots.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

25v^2+50v+15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you show me some examples?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5(x+1)^2 - 125 = 0 gives (x+1)^2 = 25. So, \[x + 1 = \pm 5 \text{ so } x=4, x=-6\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well if you look at the equation and use PEMDAS you know that the exponent is first so you foil (V+1)^2 first so it reads (V+1)(V+1). V*V +1*V+V*1+1*1 = V^2+2V+1 Next you do the multiplication which is 25(V^2 +2V+1) = 25V^2 + 50V + 25 Now don't forget to do the last subtraction 25V^2 + 50V + 25 - 10 which is 25v^2+50v+15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you solving for the variable or are you just trying to simplify?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The problem just says solve. So I am guessing it means solve for the variable. After I get to the answer I just have to use the quadratic equations correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea you can do that! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome thank you :) I will do it and post my answer maybe we can compair?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You don't need to bother expanding and getting it in a standard form. You can just take square roots when you have the bracket on its on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I asked the math teach and since this is on a take home quiz all he could tell me is FOIL.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But you can just write (v+1)^2 = 2/5 and then square root.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That gets the same answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Should do! \[v = -1 \pm \sqrt{\frac{2}{5}}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bfsgd is right you can do it that way too. I was showing you the way to foil it but this way works too... It's actually the faster way to do it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But why do you write it (v+1)^2 = 2/5. I am confused on where the -10 came in and the 25. I have never done it that way mind teaching me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You add the 10 to move it to the other side. Then divide through by the 25 giving 10/25 = 2/5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

^^^ TRRUUUUEEEEE

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok I am with you so far.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now you can square root both sides and remember that a square root has a positive and negative solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

than you square root each side!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sqrt(v+1)^2=sqrt(2/5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then subtract 1 GOT you now lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

word! haha good job :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wow.. I felt like a retard walking through that one haha.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahaha it's all good! i was terrible at this when i was first learning this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks bfsgd!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is my second time learning it ! Just being refreshed again and math isn't my tough subject :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol i'm learning calc again and it sux lol! i flew through it when i first learned it and now i'm having trouble with it... MathIsSuchAPain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Agreed!
