Many years ago the Central American isthmus rose from the sea and blocked the exchange of water between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The result was a dramatic decrease in the amount of warm Atlantic water entering the Arctic, and the appearance of ice in the surrounding lands. Consequently, an ice sheet developed over Greenland at that time and has apparently been maintained there since. This further cooled the high northern latitudes so that ice began appearing over both Canada and Scandinavia.
