I'm sorry, I don't really know this at the top of my head... @InYourHead might know when he comes online :)
Alright. Our three Memory Systems are.... 1. Sensory memory 2. Short term memory 3. Long term memory I'll explain each one real quick. ~~~~~~~~~~~ SENSORY memory is just information that we get, from the world around us. It's information that enters our minds. This kind of memory usually only lasts a few seconds. For example, if you're having a conversation with someone, and you remember what the person JUST told you, 2 seconds ago, then you are using your SENSORY memory. Another example, if you're walking on the sidewalk, and you pass by a black & white cat, then you'll probably remember exactly where you saw that cat, for a few seconds. That's SENSORY memory. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SHORT TERM memory lasts a little longer than sensory memory. These memories don't always last forever, but they will usually last for as long as you practice them. For example, if you're studying for a vocab test, you have to memorize all of the words. And then after you take your vocab test, you might forget all the words that you studied, because after the test, you don't study them anymore. That's SHORT TERM memory. It doesn't always last forever. It usually lasts as long as we practice it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LONG TERM memory is the kind of memory that stays with us, for all our lives. You'll always remember how to walk. You'll always remember how to write. You'll always remember your birthday. You'll always remember your parents' faces. This is LONG TERM memory. It usually lasts for our entire lives. Here's a special fact: Sometimes, short term memory can turn into long term memory, if we practice long and hard enough. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In order to learn ANYTHING, we need to REMEMBER. I'll show you examples where we use all three types of memory. Let's pretend you're reading a book. In order to remember the sentence that you read, 5 seconds ago, you would need to use your SENSORY memory. In order to memorize all the new facts that you learn, you would need to use your SHORT TERM memory. In order to actually read the book, you would need to use your LONG TERM memory. The ability to read is a part of our LONG TERM memory. We will ALWAYS remember how to read.
And there it is!! @InYourHead strikes again!! LOL, but seriously, those are awesome explanations :) my brain even got an extra session of psych :) thanks @InYourHead :D
