What is the subject in the sentence "With great power comes great responsibility." ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hi the subject of this sentence is great power

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe the subject is responsibility. The reason I think this is because " with great power " is a prepositional phrase, and anything in the prepositional phrase cannot be the subject.

Got into a heated discussion with my English teacher. I actually agree with @kelliegirl33, but that doesn't mean I'm (we're) right... My teacher insists the subject is "power" but I disagreed, because, in the sentence, is it not "responsibility" that comes?

Is w" with great power " a prepositional phrase ?

typo * with

Parth (parthkohli):

Hello. I think the subject is the thing which comes first and is the center of the sentence.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

prepositional phrases cannot contain the subject. Is " with great power " a prep phrase ?

Parth (parthkohli):

No, a preposition is not the subject. It's a noun.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

" with great power " is a noun phrase ?

Parth (parthkohli):

I don't know. I think the subject should be a word.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was confused ....at first I thought power was the subject, but the " with " was throwing me off.

Parth (parthkohli):

Actually, "power" is the subject.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The reason I changed my mind was because I thought " with great power" was a prep phrase. And I know that a prep phrase cannot contain the subject. I guess I was wrong. Thanks for your input. I know when I have a problem, you are the one to go to. Thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would think that the subject is responsibility.

OpenStudy (zugzwang):

But when you think about it , is it really that different from, say, a much simpler form, "With it, came that." or perhaps, "To him, I spoke." Is it not the same as "Great responsibility comes with great power." ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I strongly believe that the subject is responsibility. I believe that your teacher is incorrect.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The subject is 'responsibility'.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will go with responsibility as subject.

OpenStudy (maddyx):

You need to isolate the subject and predicate so, flipping the sentence, "Great responsibility comes with great power" so, subject should be "great responsibility". But you should discuss it with your teacher :)
