Have a STATE test on Tuesday! Can someone help me study if I have them the sample test? Please? I really need it? (:
Sorry - that link just leads to a login screen that I can't access. Is there something specific you need help studying?
Yes! Sorry about that! Can you give me a minute so I can get the questions for you?
What I mostly need help with is understanding vocabulary and how to choose the right mulitple choice answer. And maybe an explaination.
Yep no problem
It wont let me post it so... Ummmm...
Gahhh! Hold on! So so sorry!
Maybe try taking a screenshot and posting it as a file?
Haha it's alright I'm not going anywhere
Right! See I never thought of that! Haha!
:)
This is the sample test but usually its a writing prompt but I just want to be more aware for the multiple reading choice test.
Thank you so much by the way! :)
I also took this test an hour ago and I got a 4/9! Then I took the reading test and got an 18/27! :[ Yikes!? I know?!
Ok, for thoze two questions I would say D would be the best answer for the first question, and C would be the best answer for the second. As far as studying for this type of thing, I would make sure you understand the meaning and uses of different transition words. This is a good site for that - http://www.studygs.net/wrtstr6.htm - because it groups the transition words based on meaning. The overall question seems to be testing your understanding of how sentences are connected in a logical order - so I think studying the meaning of those transition words might help
Hmm.. do you have those results still? If you do I could help explain which questions you got wrong
Or if you don't I could give more detail about the two you just sent
No I don't... sorry. I exited out of them because I kind of hate myself for failing the practice test! Ha. But last year (8th grade) I failed the reading, writing, math, and science state tests! So I'm just trying to help myself to at least meet the requirements for this years! My school also has sucky percentages of their state test scores so I'm moving schools by the end of this year.
But I would love more detail about the 2 I just sent! :)
Ah ok. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to help you study. I'll type up explanations for those two in one minute
Okay! Thank you! :) Sorry if it takes me a while to reply I am also getting help in Math as well! :)
Ok - for question 1, this is where studying that page of transitions may help. "however" and "nevertheless" accomplish the same thing - they are both words used to compare + contrast. (Theyre both under that category on that site) So by process of elimination, you can already rule those out because they essentially have the same meaning. "Because" and "Consequently" also have similar meanings - they show a consequence or result, but if you look at the structure of sentence 5, using "because' as the first word of the sentence just wouldn't make sense.
No problem take your time
My teacher also said you should never start your sentences with 'Because'. My answer to question 1 was 'However'.
Ah okay, you need to look at the word that best links the ideas of sentence 4 and 5. "However' is a word you would use if sentence 5 was a different idea than sentence 4, but if you read carefully you'll see that sentence 5 actually elaborates on and supports sentence 4. It shows a result. And a word that indicates that a sentence is about to show a result is "Consequently"
Let me know if that is clear :)
Yes that is clear. What is the meaning of Consequently, exactly?
Consequently means "as a result of"... you could use "thus," or "therefore," to mean the same thing.
The website has a new program that only allows a certain number of passwords. *Therefore,* the hacker's success is limited
Okay...
See what I mean by "showing a result"? It's emphasizing what the previous sentence stated. A different example would be something like "She is studying for the test. *Consequently,* she will probably get a good grade."
Oh okay! I get it now... kinda lol
Haha I can give more examples until you get it completely. Do you see how the transition words are showing different relationships between the sentences? Or are you confused by the meaning of the sentences in that question's paragraph?
Hmmm... I dont really know. Haha! But throw a question with a multiple choice answer to see if I get it! :)
Hmm okay - Sarah was happy being by herself. __________, she also missed her sister. a. Incidentally b. However c. In addition d. In other words
B. However
Yep, perfect
Yay! Can we do maybe 2 more but the next one hard and the other one harder?
So the only thing you need to do with these paragraphs, is work on identifying the relationships between more complex sentences. Then it should be simple to guess the transition word, once you understand how they are connected.
Sure - let me try to think up some examples haha
Oh! Okay! Haha!
Jeremy is very active and enjoys exercising; ______________, Chris sits on his couch all day playing video games. A. similarly B. for example C. in addition D. on the other hand E. as a result
D. On the other hand.
Yep. Trying to think of more complex ones haha
make this one really really hard! :)
Reading a book is always much better than watching a movie based on a book. (1)______________ the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words,” a book is able to give much more information than a movie can give. The author can give the thoughts of characters; (2)______________, a movie usually conveys only the actions and words of the characters. A - Additionally B - Despite C - Consequently D - In Contrast E - Being that,
B. Despite && C. Consequently?
Despite is correct, but the second one isn't. The first sentence is saying that the author can give detailed descriptions of characters in their thoughts. The second says movies can only show actions and words, not as detailed. Which word would connect those two ideas?
additionally?
if not its being that
It would be "In contrast" - because the two sentences show opposite ideas
and "In contrast' means the same as "On the other hand,"
Oh......
by any chance do you know math? Like linear equations and inequalities?
haha I'm not very good with math. I could try if nobody else is on to help - but if there is, they would probably have a better idea than I would
Haha it's fine I'll find someone! lol I am no better at math than you are! (obviously)
haha alright.
I'm heading to bed - if you need further help later on feel free to message me. Have a good night!
Haha! I will! Thanks again! I think I am prepared for the reading state test! :) Now off to take notes on this! :)
