Does acidic drinks and food cause ulcers? Because I know to help heal one you need to drink a lot of milk and whatnot, as to coat the wound or sore. Correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ulcers are caused by stress, coffee, spicy foods, some aspirins, and H. pylori bacteria. So yes acidic drinks and food can cause ulcers. Drinking milk actually isn't a way to help correct it. If your drink lots of water *one of the best ways to fix ulcers*, this helps dilute the acid and allows the sores to heal. You can also take antiacids such as Peptobismol to help reduce acid.

Thanks!

acid in stomach less of mucosal protective covering and a genetic predisposition plus a environmental insult cause ulcers. milk was actually used in the past for ulcers as it is slightly alkaline unlike coffee or tea.what happened was ulcer patients started drinking too much of milk and calcium and other components of milk caused what is called milk alkaly syndrome..... the treatments now available are multiple proton pump inhibitors which cause block of final step of acid secretion in stomach antacids which neutralize acid called antacids h2 receptor blockers..like ranitidine cimetidine and like u said drugs which coat ulcer like sucralfate and prevent acid from coming into contact with susceptible cells.... also a type of bacteria called helicobacter pylori which causes indolent ulcers...then above medicines will not heal it....u need to take combination antibiotics to treat it.....

No, stress does not cause ulcers. It has been proved that ulcers are caused by bacteria, specifically Helicobacter pylori.
