Integral of: tan(x)dx ? How do you do it?

OpenStudy (raden):

convert tan(x) to sin(x)/cos(x), first

OpenStudy (raden):

then we can use integral by u-subs let u = cos(x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you do it by parts?

OpenStudy (raden):

i ever do it by part, but it doesnt work just do it by u-subs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i try...

OpenStudy (raden):

sipp.. get ur answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dont stress me ;-)

OpenStudy (raden):

which parts make be strses :P

OpenStudy (raden):

actually. it is just a basic to learning integration by u-subs may be this site useful :) http://math2.org/math/integrals/more/tan.htm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got it: -ln(cos(x))

OpenStudy (raden):

yup :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My teacher actually wrote -ln(lcos(x)l) do you know why?

OpenStudy (raden):

dont forget + c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right thanx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why the absolute value?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can't take ln of negative value , that's why absoloute value

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why can't you?
