Algebra One help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Adam can wash and detail his car in 2 hours, and Lisa can wash and detail her car in 4 hours. If they work together, how long will it take them to wash and detail both cars?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have up to the fraction, I just need help with that. I have 4/3 and I don't remember how to simplify it. (if that's what its called.) The example has 20/9 and then it simplifies to 2 2/9. How would I do that with 4/3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is what it think for the 1st one...... if that is the case, then add the 2 and 4 to find how long it would take for both of them to wash and detail both cars...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there are 4 1/3 in order to make 1, 3 1/3s are needed. so 4/3 would translate to 1 and 1/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for the second one.....this is it..... 1. find the number of times 9 would go into 20. 2.Find the remainder after after 9 has gone into 20. 3.Divide the remainder ny the denominator which is 9..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's not one of the answers though, do you want me to put up the multiple choice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

very much so yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 hours 2 3/5 hours 2 5/7 hours 2 2/3 hours

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the question says both cars so 4/3 x 2 is 8/3 or 2 and 2/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait, let me just clear something up, I don't think I was right. I got 8/6 for a fraction first, was I suppose to simplify?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you got 4/3 for the one car right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, I got 8/6 as a final answer, then simplified to 4/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait 8/6 is 4/3 im sorry. Anyway, this question is asking about 2 cars, not one. so when you simplify8/6 to 4/3, you have to multiply it by 2 to represent the fact that 2 cars are mentioned in the problem. I misread it at first, anyway, when you simplified 8/6, you did it right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok now, I need 4/3 as one of the multiple choice answers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you then multiply 4/3 by 2 to get 8/3. once you do that you simplify 8/3 to get 2 and 2/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH. OK! Thanks! You just helped me A LOT.I have more questions though. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well i have to go but i'll be around. I like this site. Its really helpful. i can brush up on my algebra and there are some people here that can help me with my calculus problems. I will keep an eye out for you though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thx
