OpenStudy (imtant):

Determine the components i and j for each vector below. Determine the resultant of the vectors in the i and j.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are the components for F3 correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Meaning are those given to you?

OpenStudy (imtant):

yes,it is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, well how i was taught to do vectors was to use right triangle trig. Do you have a background in using i and j form? (which are also known as unit vectors)

OpenStudy (imtant):

not at all.just i know that i for x axis and j for y axis.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and that is all you need to know. are you familiar with the cartesian coordinate system? and how you write a point (x,y)?

OpenStudy (imtant):

it is like this? Ri=58 cos 30 degree+50 cos 135 degree+45 sod 112.3 degree + 40 cos 112.7 degree? it's for the i component..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you looking for the i and j of the entire system? or each vector on its own? because that equation you just posted would be for the entire system, and it still would not be correct

OpenStudy (imtant):

no,each vector.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since you are confused, the easiest vector to solve is for F4. F4 is moving in the positive x direction with a force of 40kN, think about this not so much as a force, but just as a point. And there is no pull in the y direction. so the force will will have a vector notation of 40i+0j

OpenStudy (anonymous):

next lets take on F1. |dw:1365392293558:dw| remember SOH-CAH-TOA sin(30)=y/58 sin(30)*58=y 29=y cos(30)=x/58 cos(30)*58=x x=50.23 so the vector notation for F2= 50.23i + 29j

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does that make sense? I am sorry, my drawing got cut off. |dw:1365392671955:dw|

OpenStudy (imtant):

Ok,i get it.but is there a mistake?this is for f1 right?

OpenStudy (imtant):

vector notation for f1?right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is for F1, i dont believe there is a mistake, but i am human haha, what is the mistake that you are noticing?

OpenStudy (imtant):

it is f2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I solved for the vector in the first quadrant with the f value of 58kN. I'm not sure if you labeled them wrong or something, but that is the vector is solved for

OpenStudy (imtant):

but it's ok,dave.thanks.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you understand what I did? Like am i actually helping you? or confusing you more and should just quit trying to help? haha

OpenStudy (imtant):

yes,i had already understand it.don't feel like that,Dave.thanks again. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok no problem! i just dont want to confuse you more! do you need more help? Just remember that when a vector is facing a negative direction, that part of the form will be negative i.e. F2, the form will take -i+j
