PIC BELOW PLEASE HELP A running track is in the shape of the figure shown. What is the approximate length of one lap? Use three point one four for pi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A.357 FT B.600 FT C.714 FT D.914 FT

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets break up the picture into 2 different parts of the track. we have the straight lines (each one is 200ft long) and we have the half circles. we see from the picture that the diameter of the half circle is 100. so the radius is 50. the equation for circumference of a circle is (pi) x (radius)^2. now remember that its only a half circle on each end

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry typo.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the circumference is just the diameter X pi.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LOST

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright, you see that dotted line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YEA

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That divides the figure to a semi circle. Now, the formula for the length of that semi circle is pi(r) where r is the radius.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's a part of it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I trust you can figure out r?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean, I can go ahead and serve you with a solution but I consider it important for you to understand what we just did here. Do I have you on this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

SO A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c is the solution, if you're so keen on it. I was only going step by step.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

MERTSJ DOUAGREE WITH C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. :|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Made an error, there. 1028

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Damn.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait a cotton pickin minute! 100 is 2r. Isn't it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your mistake was adding the circumference twice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it should be 714

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If we're takin half the circle that's 3.14*r. r=100

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exactly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry, 2r=100

OpenStudy (anonymous):

du! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@electrokid 2r=100 r=50! that is:- (pi)r+200+(pi)r+200 that is 157+200+157+200 That is 714!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Damn, I'm easy to confuse!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes.. I missed the "half" circle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good work guys
