Which do you think is more important: Specific or Non-Specific immunity?

thomaster (thomaster):

specific immunity involved a b cell response that results in the production of antibodies which bing to the pathogen to cause inactivation and opsinisation. this reaction is very highly pathogen specific, and a different response is initiated for diferent species. it is also a 'learned' response and results in the production of immunogenic memory. this is the principle being vaccination. it usually results in the recognition of a very unique protein on a pathogen. non-specific response is more generalised. for example phagocytic leukocytes can recognise LPS - a carbohydrate that is commonly found in the wall of a very large range of bacteria. non-specific immune response involves the recognition that something is abnormal and destroys it. no immunogenic memmory is generated.
