was hitler a president. ?
yes
a good one at that !
he was elected but took over as a dictator'
Technically he wasn't President. His party had earned seats and a large chunk of the vote, but Hitler (as a candidate for the Presidency) came in second to the elderly Hindenberg in 1932. But because his party had gained so many seats, and to seek unity in the government, Hindenberg was urged to give Hitler a position in government anyway -- that of Chancellor -- which is kind of like a second-in-command but with a lot more power than that of a Vice President. During his time as Chancellor, he maneuvered to earn more political power, capitalizing on crises such as the Reichstag fire which was leveraged into the Enabling Act, purged (by murder or intimidation, such as the Night of the Long Knives) enemies, and was in a powerful position by the time President Hindenberg died. When that happened, the office of President was actually wiped out. All of the powers of the office went to the Chancellor (Hitler) and became a brand new position -- that of the Fuhrer.
