Proportions A recipe for pancakes calls for 2 cups flour and 1 1/2 cups milk to make a serving for four people. Ming Has plenty of flour, but only 4 cups milk. How many servings can he make?
Well how many times can 1 1/2 go into four?
not sure
1.5x2=3 1.5x3=4.5 therefore he can only make 3 complete servings, but he'd still have leftover milk.
okay i am not so sure how the the five is involved do you mind if you can explain a bit more. sorry i am a bit confused
Its okay :) so, the flour proportions are totally irrelevant, so just ignore that information. The recipe calls for 1.5 cups of milk, and "Ming" only has 4. To figure out how much he can make with the amount of milk he has, you have to divide the recipe amount into his total amount which will show you how many servings he can possibly make.
so 1.5 in fraction would be 3/2 cups of milk right? and with that i need to find how many servings so i dont need to worry about the 2 cups of flour right since she has enough
You're making it way too complicated by trying to convert the decimals into fractions. There is no need to do so unless instructed. and yes, you dont have to look at the flour information, they put distractions like that in word problems to trip students up.
yea but i do better in fractions for some reason. yea and i was wondering why i was messing up on that specific problem thanks for the heads up. okay since in decimals 1.5 divided by 4 cups of milk right?
ah, well if you are better with fractions i'd say go for it! and yes, thats all you do! :D
yayy! if you don't mind ill take a sec and see what i get and if you can correct my answer if its fine with you?
Absolutely :)
okay i had put 0.35 however the real answer to the problem ended up being 10 2/3 servings which really took me off there
Ah, you were dividing 4 into 1.5 not 1.5 into 4.
ohhh no wonder lol than you ill try tht right now
yea still not getting it
1.5 divided by 4 should technically end up with 2.6... then youd round up to 3 :)
okay yea i got that but i still don't know where to go from there to get 10 2/3
The answer is 10 2/3?
yea the textbook has answers on the back of the book so whenver i need to check if my answer is correct. and it says 10 2/3 and i am trying to get that answer and its not showing up
I... honestly have no idea then. I guess im missing a large but obvious flaw? You should check with your teacher then come back to me..
yea sorry bout that but thanks anyways for helping me :)
