How does the skin help us fight infection? What does it mean that it is a "non-specific" defense?

thomaster (thomaster):

The skin always has some bacteria or other micro organisms on it. The skin is the first defence line of the body. It consists of different layers which block bacteria from going trough. The top layer of the skin sheds off taking all the bacteria with it. That keeps them from staying too long on the skin. Non specific means that it protects against almost every bacterium or other infectious micro organism. Specific defence would means that it defends against 1 bacterium of a group.

What are the jobs of antibodies?

thomaster (thomaster):

antibodies connect to the antigenes of a pathogen and lock them. Then macrophage will eat the pathogens (phagocytose). So the antibodies catch the invaders and the macrophage destroys them.
