Why does music written in a minor key sound "sad" or "downbeat," while music in a major key sounds "happy" or "upbeat"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because songs in Minor keys use minor chords. Major key = Major Chords. Minor chords are usually darker sounding and major chords are "happy". Hope this helps!

I think you would have to dig in to why the brain perceives what it does in order to truly understand this. Maybe it's just because when we were young, we would correlate minor keys with something sad like in the movies. While when things get resolved and everyone's happy you hear music in the major key.

The 3rd note in the scale along with the 7th is mad flat. This creates a mystical feel.
