There are many ways to calculate the surface area of a composite figure. What should always be the same is the surface area. It's like slicing a pie, you can cut it different ways, and add them up, but you'll always end up with the same amount of pie. Area is in units squared. The prime example of this is "the square", a square has area, not length or volume, so area is measured in "square" units. You need to be careful NOT to count the interior faces when calculating the surface area of a composite figure. This can lead to errors. Remember, when the pieces are "joined back together" the interior faces will be on the INSIDE, not the surface.
