Eric rolled a 5 on a number cube. He then rolled a 6. Are these events dependent or independent? Thank you for helping and can you please show how you figured out the problem so know how to figure out later on problems like this one?

Pleeeaaassseee help!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

is there a possibility that rolling a 5 somehow affects rolling a 6? or vice versa?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It doesn't say in the problem, but I think I found the answer. Thanks though soooo much for your help!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what did you get for the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got dependant.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's incorrect

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i meant dependent.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

rolling a 5 does NOT affect how you roll a 6

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

both events have the same chance of occurring (1/6) and rolling one value does NOT change the odds of rolling the other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, so wouldn't that make it dependent? Wait......

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no, it would make it independent

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

each event is on its own

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

neither event is dependent on the other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
