what confuses me is the -l 2-5 l what am i supposed to do with the - sign on the outside?

The pipes | | mean absolute value, so if it's a negative, you turn it into a positive 2 - 5 = -3. then apply the absolute value to get 3. The negative sign at the front is basically -1 * (number here), so if the number is a negative, it'll turn positive if the number is positive it'll turn negative.
