OpenStudy (madhatter):

can someone help me understand Graphing Linear Inequalities

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They are two basic types of graphing methods I use un my class: y=1/2x +4 called the slope intercept method 2x+3y=6 called the standard form method do you know how to graph lines? its teh first step to graph inequalities.

OpenStudy (madhatter):

i think i do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay great so if you have y>1/2x +2 first graph y=1/2x+2 but make teh line dotted because they is no - under the >

OpenStudy (madhatter):

ok

OpenStudy (madhatter):

then what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay great now we have to shade one side of the line of the other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we do taht by trying an experiment with a randomly choosen point not on the line, I always choose (0,0) if the graph doesnt go through it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we do this by put (0,0) which is (x, y) into y>1/2x +2

OpenStudy (madhatter):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to see if its true of false. 0>1/2(0) +2 0>0+2 0>2 is false

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since it false we shade on teh side of teh line that (0,0) is not on if it was true we would shape on the side it is on

OpenStudy (madhatter):

what do u mean true of false

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when see here i took teh equation y>1/2x + 2 and put 0 in for x and y and got 0>1/2(0) +2 0>0+2 0>2 is false and since 0>2 is not a true statement its false

OpenStudy (madhatter):

can u demonstrate with this problem y<x+3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (madhatter):

thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1366223950040:dw| so I will graph y=x+3 y intercept is (0, 3) and slope is 1/1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay I graphed the line okay

OpenStudy (madhatter):

ok but u said that u shade in one side of it how do i figure that out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now I will do taht part

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just taking it in steps

OpenStudy (madhatter):

oh ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now I will take my equation y<x+3 and chose a point to experiement with I choose (0,0) so if I take y<x+3 and repalce x and y with zero 0<0+3 0<3 which says zero is less than 3 which is true

OpenStudy (madhatter):

ok then what...?????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now I shape on teh side that has (0,0)
