Please help! Given f(x)=4x^2+3x-5 and g(x) = -2x+12, find (fg)(x) Thank you!

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Did you mean to close this right after posting it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No! It was an accident. Sorry!

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

np. Is that a composition, as in fog(x) where the o is really a small circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Ah, OK.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

That should be multiplication.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

So basically \(fg(x)\) means \((4x^2+3x-5)(-2x+12)\)

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Do that multiplication and you have the answer. If you want a double check, post it here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ooooo. I see now.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yah, half the battle is figuring out what the heck the queston means! Math has very specific meanings for things like the order of functions in a list, \(\in\), \(\therefore\), and so on. You end up needing to learn them as you go just to make sense of the questions!
