What is an appositive?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An appositive is a noun next to another noun or pronoun that "takes its place" or, technically, defines it. For instance, in the sentence, "My dog Fido caught the bone," Fido is the appositive for dog.

An "appositive" is a noun, or a phrase, that describes another noun right next to it. Here, I'll show you some examples: "Clifford, THE BIG RED DOG, ate my baby." "Jesus, MY DOUCHEBAG OF A BROTHER, replaced my hair-dryer with a potato." ~~~~~~~~ The capitalized parts of the sentences are "appositives."
