countermelodies were used mainly in fugues (like in the works of J.S.Bach) and they are more like distinct melodic lines than accompaniments...to make you spot the difference liste n to a fugue from Bach at piano and try to listen to what is played by the left hand ...that is the countermelody....the accompaniment you can undestand from the big chords for example in Chopin's Nocturnes
