Could Moraxella lacunata cause an infection in the respiratory tract?

thomaster (thomaster):

I made a streak plate for a colony from sputum material. The streak plate has the typical smell of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. But i determinated M. lacunata using an API 20NE. M. lacunata usually causes blepharoconjunctivitis. My final determination is P. aeruginosa ofcourse but i wonder if M. lacunata could also cause an infection the the respiratory tract. If not i guess the API test failed.

Moraxella lacunata causes many diseases like tracheobronchitis and pneumonia. Moraxella lacunata is one of the causes of blepharoconjunctivitis in human.

Moraxella lacunata ...... whose scientific name is it?

thomaster (thomaster):

@rahulchatterjee Do you have a source? Moraxella catarrhalis is most likely to cause tracheobronchitis and pneumonia. I didn't know lacunata could also.

Clinical significance Infection occurs mainly in adults, but can occur at any age. It is characterized by: Chronic, mild angular blepharo-conjunctivitis frequently localized on the lid at the outer canthus. Typical erythema of the edges of the lids Slight maceration of the skin, most marked at the angles, especially the outer canthus. Superficial infiltration of the cornea is not uncommon.[3] The discharge is grayish yellow, adherent to the lashes and accumulates mainly at the angles.[5] References ^ Morax-axenfeld bacillus - Medical Definition and More from Merriam-Webster ^ a b Bergey's Manual® of Systematic Bacteriology: Volume 2: The Proteobacteria ... - كتب Google ^ a b Read the ebook The pathology of the eye (Volume 1) by John Herbert Parsons ^ JAMA Network | Archives of Ophthalmology | Variations in Morax-Axenfeld Diplobacillus ^ http://www.termiumplus.gc.ca/tpv2alpha/alpha-eng.html?lang=eng&i=1&index=alr&srchtxt=tumefaccion&where=%28vpen_advanced,vpfr_advanced,vpes_advanced,vppt_advanced+inc+%27tumefaccion%27+%29&dom=NED&comencdomnsubj=

@sraone88 I have read the wikipedia page. It says nothing about respiratoral tract infections.

EVIDENCE...A CASE REPORT

thomaster (thomaster):

Nice case report, but it says nothing about respiratory tract infection caused by M. lacunata :P. Only that Moraxella catarrhalis causes it. I think the API just failed. Due to the smell of the colonies i can tell it's P. aeruginosa (it has a very typical odor) But thanks anyway :D
