What is the relationship between P- and S-waves?

s cant travel through liquid p can

A p-wave is a primary wave, its amplitude is in the direction of wave propagation (could be up down or side to side), and s-wave is a secondary wave or sometimes known as the perpendicular wave because its amp is perpendicular to the propagation. Meaning that if the primary wave goes up and down the Secondary wave goes side to side. If you are measuring shorter distances use P-waves. Greater distances require S-waves. Either method used to measure will give similar results

P waves are longitudinal waves and S waves are transverse waves
