Simplify -[3-(-6)] got this incorrect a million times

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what did you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, so lets take this one step at a time. First focus on the inside, you have 3-(-6). what does that equal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, that's not right. You're multiplying 3 and -6, but you should be subtracting them, I think that's where you mistake may be natalie :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is (3) - (-6)? what happens when you subtract a negative number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

(3) - (-6) is the same as (3) + (6) you can think of the two negatives cancelling out to form a positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

almost! just follow what @jim_thompson5910 said. Once you get the answer to taht, all you have to do is negate it (due to the negative on the outside) and you're good to go! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about the negative in the outside

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-[3-(-6)] -[3+6] -[9] -9

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so you basically evaluate 3-(-6) to get +9 then you change it to -9 since there's a negative out front

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got it
