What is the best definition of connotation? 1.)the shades of meaning behind the dictionary definition 2.)the definition behind the definition 3.)the dictionary definition 4.)the author's meaning behind the choice of word

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Any ideas?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Connotation is closely related to context.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's 4

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

@raane Code of conduct: OpenStudy values the Learning process - not the ‘Give you an answer’ process Don’t post only answers - guide the asker to a solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because the proper definition for connotation is an idea or feeling that a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning. So,in your case connotation is the authors meaning.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hope it will help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

skullpatrol:> I did not only gave an answer but I also explained it

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

You are not guiding the asker to a solution, you gave the answer and then explained why>

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

"Guiding" someone to a solution has a very different denotation than what you just did @raane

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

By definition: "guiding" someone is giving them directions, not taking them to the answer. @raane

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'd rather just get the answer. So thanks, @raane :) And @skullpatrol, there's no need to get all butt-hurt just because somebody gave me the answer, but didn't "guide" me to it. I don't post questions on here for somebody to "guide" me to. I post so somebody can give me the answer straight up.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

What you are doing is cheating yourself of a learning experience.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

That is your choice so good luck on the test.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Do you understand what a Code of conduct means: OpenStudy values the Learning process - not the ‘Give you an answer’ process Don’t post only answers - guide the asker to a solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm young. I've got awhile to achieve learning experiences, thank you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Who follows that!? I sure don't. Pretty sure most people on here don't want to be guided to the answer, they want it now. Like I do. But if you want to be guided or be the guide, I sure ain't gonna stop ya. Go for it, skippy.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Did you even think about what I said above about "context?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope. I didn't. :)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Ok, that is your choice...and no one can force you to learn.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Everybody has their own way of learning. Some people don't go by the book.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

That is sooo true, all I'm asking for is you to give me a chance to teach you what the relationship is between context and connotation :D
