Here we go... 1) This depends. If you want to go for the first, most crushing defeat of the Germans in WW2, that's the Battle of Stalingrad. Though if you want an earlier one, their defeat at Moscow could also be a contender. Not as cataclysmic as Stalingrad, but still significant. 2) To split Germany's forces. As the Soviets rolled the Germans back, the Allies in the West were planning a second front to pull Hitler's military into different directions. 3) The Invasion of Normandy, which opened the long awaited "second front" along the Reich's western frontier. 4) Germany formally surrendered on May 7th, 1945. http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/07/may-7-1945-nazi-germany-surrenders-in-world-war-ii/ 5) President Truman; he took office after the death of Roosevelt. 6) The Pacific Strategy of the United States -- instead of taking each island held by the Japanese, the US "leaped" past tactically insignificant islands to concentrate on more important ones instead, cutting them off. 7) To, in the words of Truman in the Potsdam Declaration, "prompt and utter destruction". By that time, the US air force was routinely bombing Japanese cities. 8) The atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. 9) The atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. 10) Japan surrenders. 11) There are a lot of things that resulted from the end of the war: - Germany was split into West and East Germany - The United States and the Soviet Union would compete for world influence in the Cold War - Eastern Europe would fall under the influence of the Soviet Union - both Japan and Western Europe were rebuilt with the help of the United States to help resist the overtures of Communism
