What is the coefficient in this algebraic expression? 5a + 2

thomaster (thomaster):

A coefficient is a value that is usually multiplied or comes with a variable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its ganna be A or what helpe me out yea

thomaster (thomaster):

the coefficient of a = 5 because it's before the variable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so A=5 or what

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

coefficient is 5

thomaster (thomaster):

no the coefficient of a is 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k

OpenStudy (andriod09):

benjamin, a coefficient of a variable is the number to the left of the variable, in this case, it would be 5a+2, the coefficient, would be 5. The reason for this is because you would multiply the value of "a" by 5, then you would add two, like this: 5(a)+2, or you would right it like this: \[5\times a+2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont get u

OpenStudy (andriod09):

The answer to this problem that you asked would be 5. A coefficient is a number that you multiple by something else, like in science, if you see: \[2H_{2}O\] a coefficient in that would be the two, is it not? so then, the coefficient in this problem, \[5a+2\] would be 5, would it not?
