Because when the stock market crashed many large industries went out of business and a dramatic amount of ppl lost there jobs all at once.

Haven't you ever seen the pictures of the soup lines? Haven't you heard of all the people who couldn't afford shoes? Why do you think they didn't have food and clothes? Because they spent their money on beer and cigarettes or because they had no money because they didn't have jobs? Or you could google "What was the unemployment rate during the depression" That might give you some idea as well.
