what was the Dawes Act? what did it attempt to do? and why did it fail?

OpenStudy (e.cociuba):

The American government tried to Americanize the Native American population by offering land and citizenship to those who would give up their tribal traditions and culture. The Dawes Act (February 8, 1887) encouraged several Native Americans to do as such. The Act basically regarded this distribution of land to Native Americans in Oklahoma. * It dramatically shrank the Indian reservations. The Dawes Act fulfilled a desire of the U.S. government to suppress the Indian way of life & force assimilation to white culture. Thts why it failed. :))
