multiply and simplify x^2+x-12/x-3 * x^2-2x-3/x^2+5x+4 i need a walk through it and i will award medal and fan if you are not already fanned by me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[x^2+x-12/x-3 * x^2-2x-3/x^2+5x+4\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ x^2+x-12 }{ x-3 } * \frac{ x^2-2x-3 }{x^2+5x+4} \]

Hi Kateiey...you need to factor the plynomials before you can simplify... x^2+x-12 factors to (x +4) ( x-3).....use foil to verify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

factor x^2-2x-3...in the same manner (x )(x )...the second sign tells you that there are different signs as it is minus..the first tells you that the larger number will be negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont get how show me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you need to find 2 numbers that multiply to the last number and add up to the second number.....what are the factors of -3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 and 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 and -3 ?so those numbers plug into the parenthesis....(x +1)(x-3)......then factor the denominator...x^2 +5x+4..once you have evrything factored you can cancel out like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok can you show

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need help dianes was wrong
