Determine whether the relation is a function. {(-7, -7), (-7, -8), (-1, 4), (6, 5), (10, -1)} A. Not a function B. Function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets start with what do you think, and why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I choose B am i wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and your reasoning?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why do you think b is the right answer? and dont say you guessed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

negatives dont mean a thing... defining a function basically, think of it as a machine, where x goes in one end, and y comes out the other now, what wouldn't be a function would be like a machine where x goes in one end and 2 different y's come out the other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, look at the first 2 set of numbers if -7 goes in one end and -7 comes out the other then how can -7 go in the same machine but -8 come out as well?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o ok i get you now so when you continue that method (about the machine) it come to conclude that none of it is a function tight. so the answer is A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i mean right not tight

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea its not a function because for a single input (-7) , you get two output (-7 and -8) for it to be a function, for everything single input, there must be a single output although in a function, its fine if the outputs are the same,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you for ur help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

another way of picturing it would be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1367619928562:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1367619998827:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

perfect example thank u again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1367620027394:dw| this is allowed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i understand now yayyy lol :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good for you
