Point (-4, 3) is reflected over the y-axis. What are the coordinates of the reflection?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a. (4, 3) b. (4, -3) c. (-4, -3) d. (-4, 3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What does it mean to reflect across the y-axis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I.e, I'm not going to just give you the answer :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um, hold on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A reflection over the y-axis will change the sign of your x-coordinate (the number on the left). (x,y) becomes (-x,y)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so (-4,3)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup. Perfect. Because when you are on the right (for example) you have positive x, but when you reflect across the axis you now have -x and vice versa! (-4,3) -> (-(-4),3) = (4,3) :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The perfect referring to your definition.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait, why do we have to do (-(-4),3)? i thought i already changed it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@malevolence19

OpenStudy (mertsj):

No. You didn't change it. (-4,3) is the same as (-4,3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh nevermind! i wasn't looking at it correctly. thanks @Mertsj @malevolence19
