Determine if the relation is a function. X:3,4,9 Y:-1,-5,6,2,7

OpenStudy (jim766):

it is a function if the x's are all unique

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is the relation between x and y? If one x relates to two different y's, then no, the relation is not a function.

OpenStudy (jim766):

a relation is a function if each x has a specific y matched up with it. an easy way to tell is to look to see if the x's are unique. they are, it is a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not necessarily. The relation is not defined. If the x-value of 3 relates to the y values 6 and 7, then no, it is not a function of x.

OpenStudy (jim766):

it is defined as a relation in the problem, they just gave a domain and range

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What IS the relation between the domain and the range in this case?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

A function is a set of ordered pairs in which no two ordered pairs have the same first number.

OpenStudy (jim766):

looking back at this... since there are only 3 x's and 5 y's, at least one of the x's must get repeated if all these numbers are used. I believe @eulersEquation is correct, this is not a function. sorry for any confusion.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

There is no way to know if it is a function or not because no pairing is given. No rules...just two sets of numbers.
