oops! forgot the box for 5! here it is! :)
1) That's right, Gorbachev is the guy described in that box. He was young for a typical Politburo member and was definitely reform minded. 2) (A) is totally right. Glasnost was his other policy, which meant "openness". 3) (B) is right! Gorbachev actually relaxed some of the controls over the press that his party had enjoyed for decades. The downside was that people started complaining about a lot of things revealing weaknesses in the Soviet system and hastening the need for reform. On one hand, it was a good thing to do. On the other, it also created some issues that the government wasn't prepared to deal with. 4) (A) is right again. With press reform and economic reform, many started to speak out against the Communists in power and it began snowballing from there. 5) (B) is totally correct. All of those events collectively resulted in the end of Communist control over Eastern Europe and the eventual beginning of the end for the USSR. Haha, yeah, glasnost has a funky pronunciation. I used to remember it in the same way...glaz-nost, though together it almost sounded like shorthand for glazed donuts. Other than that, good job! It looks like your lesson is taking you to the end of the Cold War.
hahaha agreed.... yumm glazed donuts=yummm :) haha yeah!! yayy! :)
