1) This is a tricky one. I'd like to say (A) after World War I because there was a lot of worry about another world war occurring. The League of Nations was formed as a result of the Treaty of Versailles to do just that, though it was largely a failure because it didn't prevent WW2. After that, we would get the United Nations which was built off of the same ideas as the League. 2) I'm actually not sure about this one myself. I feel tempted to say (C). The Baltic states actually had democratic institutions in place before the Soviets stepped in to occupy them as satellite nations since WW2. For years, they chafed under Soviet rule and when they saw the opportunity to declare themselves independent again, they took it. 3) Actually, it's the opposite -- I'd say (C). The economic freedoms of China are separate from the political reality that lies underneath it. After Tiananmen Square, and out of view of Western press, the Chinese government brutally cracked down on thousands of students and their families afterward. Many fled China and many others were simply arrested. Even if you go to China today, the government doesn't see the Tiananmen event in the same way that the West does. Soldiers regularly patrol the square and keep watch on everything and everyone there. While China seems to have a lot of freedom on the surface, the one thing you should remember is that the government and the Communist Party are still very much in charge. They just don't make a big show of it unless they have to. 4) I'd say you're right with (C). Europe is a patchwork of progressive and fairly transparent democracies that have many freedoms as a result when taken as a whole. 5) (A) is completely right. Nigeria was formed in the colonial era but like so many other nations in Africa at that time, lumped so many different ethnic groups and cultures under one roof. So when it declared independence, suddenly everything started bubbling back up to the surface. Everyone had their own ideas on who would be best to lead the country. Phew! I think that does it. :)
