OpenStudy (amber15):

In an American sign language(ASL) class of 24 students ,5 are hearing impaired. what is the ratio of hearing impaired students to the total number of students

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Do you know how ratios work?

OpenStudy (amber15):

no

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Looks like they are taking the site down soon for maintenance. Here is a reference: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/ratio.htm http://www.mathsisfun.com/definitions/ratio.html or two.

OpenStudy (amber15):

okay thank you

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

For a simple ratio, it is a lot like a fraction. When there are more than two things, it gets more complex than that.

OpenStudy (amber15):

oh okay

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

That part, "hearing impaired students to the total number of students" determines the order of the ratio.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

A to B means A on top, B on the bottom.

OpenStudy (amber15):

oh okay

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Norally I'd take time, go over it nice and slow, make sure you got all the points. But that might take more than the 20 min we have, so there is the short version and some references! I hope it is enough.

OpenStudy (amber15):

it's okay i hope i figure it out

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, both the references have clear examples. They should do a pretty good job of making this clear to you.

OpenStudy (amber15):

thank you

OpenStudy (amber15):

it wouldnt be 4/25 would it

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

It would.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Or, 5/24. Hehe. Transposed some numbers!

OpenStudy (amber15):

okay

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yah, now, if the numbers can reduce, like in a fraction, that is allowed. So 3/12 is 1/4.

OpenStudy (amber15):

it dont want me simplify

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

If it was complec, it woulld be things like, "In a bag of marbles there are six red, three green, and 1 blue. What is their ratio?" 6:3:1

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yah, with 5/24, there is nothing to simplify. 5 is prime and 24 is not a multiple of 5.

OpenStudy (amber15):

so my answer would be right i hope 5/24

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

5/24 is right. Sometimes they want it written 5:24, but both are right. If they did not specify, 5/24 is more common.

OpenStudy (amber15):

they want it in fraction

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Then that is 100% right!

OpenStudy (amber15):

thank you

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

np. have fun!
