from now to 2020, world oil consumption will rise by about 60%. Although crude oil, or petroleum, is a natural resource, it is nonrenewable and must undergo an expensive refining process before people can use it to power their cars. Respond to this statement by describing two potential effects of such a rise in oil consumption. Also, indicate whether or not you are confident that there will be ample alternative fuels to use if we drain the oil supply.

i actually just finished doing it

on the second point: there are plenty of alternative fuel sources to go around. if push comes to shove, we could always turn biomass into fuel, and sacrifice some of the arable land that could be used to grow food. but i don't think it will ever come to that. i would read the "chemistry in context" textbook. it goes into the variety of energy sources that people are developing. my favorite is solar energy.

oh well.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but thank you for helping me gsoda

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes we could also use an alternative such as solar or windmill to power our cars not just solely on oil

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if i may just add: fossil fuels come from deposits of carbon (from dead plants and animals), and these organisms in turn got their energy from the sun. so everything's solar in that sense. also, our planet is creating more fossil fuels as we speak; we are just using it too quickly. so even fossil fuels are "renewable", but we wouldn't put such a label on them.
