If that is a negative one then all you need to do is put in a negative one in the equation where ever you see a x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i do 3(-1) + 8 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 + 8 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember that the 3(-1) is the same as saying three times and negative one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops the and should be an a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then 3 + 8? = 11 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I meant to say "three times and negative one"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i got 11?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember that there is a negative there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 times one is 3.....however 3 times a negative one yeilds a different answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then -3 + 8 and then the answer would be 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I believe so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well yeah it should be given that 8 - 3 = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k thanks! new question comming up :)
