Circle A is set A, and circle B is set B. Which is your favorite? Ice cream, Cake, both, or neither? Circle A is Ice Cream with 6votes, Circle B is Cake with 1 Vote. Find A union B and explain what that number represents.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@goformit100 can u answer this?

OpenStudy (goformit100):

is there any numeric data given here for this particular question ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well I just had to do survey a total of 12 people including myself whether they like ice cream, cake , both or neither .. the number of people is in the picture i posted.

OpenStudy (goformit100):

ok I can help you now :)

OpenStudy (goformit100):

Do you know what A union B actually mean ?

OpenStudy (goformit100):

A union B means No. of elements of A and No. of elements of B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would be 6,1 ? just those two numbers?

OpenStudy (goformit100):

so here A U B represents all the numbers from Set A and Set B.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which is 6,1 ?

OpenStudy (goformit100):

No it will not be 6,2 it will be 6+4+1 it is because Union means total number of elements of the given sets.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh so to answer it I'd have to say 6,4,1 ? or 11 ?

OpenStudy (goformit100):

yes now you got it correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which one 6,4,1 or 11?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or it doesn't matter?

OpenStudy (goformit100):

Union will always will be 11 not in by using commas

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i write (11) as answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and now I have to find a intersection b?

OpenStudy (goformit100):

for intersection you must know it means that you choose those number which are common in the given sets.

OpenStudy (goformit100):

Now Madam please tell what answer you got this time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how about the 1 ? which is the number outside of the two circles?

OpenStudy (goformit100):

no it is|dw:1367907205335:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

none are alike unless i include the 1 outside of the set then the common # would be 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if none of the numbers are like what would i put as my answer? that theres nothing?

OpenStudy (goformit100):

common within the two sets, not leaving the two sets.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no numbers are common is 6,4,1??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its*

OpenStudy (goformit100):

see in your view what are the given sets ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do u mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Set A {6} Set B{1}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or would it be Set A {6,4} Set B {1,4} ? since 4 represents both?

OpenStudy (goformit100):

dont put commas in calculating the problems related to Venn Diagram. you have to add them up. Ok let me explain you.

OpenStudy (goformit100):

in the posted figure by you Set A is the set consisting the totally 10 elements in number i.e., 6+4 Set B is the set consisting the totally 10 elements in number i.e., ^+4 and the 1 outside is the one from the universal set
