Which of the following is the solution for the inequality, -5 < x - 4 < 0?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so this is what i did so far

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not sure if its right though...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-5 < x -4 < 0 -5 + 4 < x -4 < 0 + 4 1 < x -4 < -4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

these are the answers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and d is: no solution

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-5 + 4 is not 1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

0 + 4 is not -4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea but i though i had to change the - and +

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what do you mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

never mind

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

anyways, -5 + 4 = -1 and 0+4 = 4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so this is how your steps should look like -5 < x -4 < 0 -5 + 4 < x -4+4 < 0 + 4 -1 < x < 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so in that case it would be -1< x -4 < 4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yeah but you don't have a -4 on the inside like that

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it's actually -1 < x < 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea i see now

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the whole idea is to isolate x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, i forgot there for a second

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im doing this on a piece of paper and i think its a, graph 48

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-1 < x < 4 doesn't graph to what you see in graph_48.gif

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you meant graph_46.gif, then you got it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YES!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok thought so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much again!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure thing
