What is the formula for y if you know x and other x,y coordinates?

OpenStudy (oaktree):

What do you mean? Is it in a line, a parabola, a hyperbola, an ellipse...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sure one could tell with the other 4 coordinates listed. They are -6,-36; -2,-20; 1,-8; and 8,20.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Yeah, that's a line. You need to find the equation of the line through y=mx+b. The slope, m, is 4. You figure that out using \[m = \frac{ y_{2} - y_{1} }{ x_{2} - x_{1} }\]

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Then plug in an ordered pair (x,y) - of which you have four to choose from - and solve for b.

Thank you! Thats what I was trying to remember but I forgot what it was called. I haven't taken Alg in forever!

OpenStudy (oaktree):

No problem.
