the type of research in which one variable is changed to see its effect

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That sounds like a "controlled experiment."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup. Because you can use these definitions: Independent variable (also known as the manipulated variable) is what is changed or manipulated. It doesn't depend on anything else, thus the name independent. Hehe ;p Controlled variable (also known as the dependent variable) is what shows the changes. The changes that occur based off of the independent variable. For example, if you are planting multiple trees, and you are observing them, the amount of the sunlight they get would be the independent variable since you can't control the sun! And how tall the trees grow would be the controlled because that is a result from the amount of sun due to photosynthesis and such... Plus, the definition of a controlled experiment, as @InYourHead said it was, is an experiment in which you compare a known value with a variable value. So basically what you are asking... I'm not sure if that made sense, but that's how I remember it! So I agree with @InYourHead. I hope that helped and didn't confuse you! LOL :P

And lol I meant to label them as independent variable and dependent variable, also known as manipulated variable and controlled variable, but I kinda mixed them up! But they're basically synonyms for each other because you refer to that definition with both terms... :/ But mainly, people use independent and dependent. :) Sorry bout that!
