The Suez Canal, built in 1869 largely by French engineers and French capital, was significant because it A. connected the Mediterranean with the Persian Gulf. B. connected the Nile with the Red Sea. C. gave Egypt an agricultural advantage by putting hundreds of thousands of new acres under cultivation. D. reduced travel time from Europe to India from months to weeks.

I'd go with (A) as the most direct answer. By connecting the Med to the Persian Gulf, it opened up a valuable trading route that cut down a lot of travel time instead of having to go all the way around Africa.

The answer is D. It has been built by a french engineer who was a friend of the ruler of Egypt that time ( a hated ruler ) he agreed to dig the Suez Canal by EGYPTIAN workers (A lot of them died) and the french engineer took lands for FREE next to the Suez Canal. It's main purpose was to travel easily and not take the other way (which would take much longer).
