what is a null hypothesis and an alternative hypothesis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.... terrible example

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

A hypothesis is a guess at some fact. The null and alternative hypotheses are two competing and opposite hypotheses that cover all possibilities For example, you could make a guess that the mean height of a plant is 10 inches Your null hypothesis would be Ho: mu = 10 The alternative hypothesis would be "the average plant height is NOT 10 inches", so the alternative hypothesis in symbolic form is Ha: mu =/= 10 (mu doesn't equal 10)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so does the null hypothesis mean its purely by chance? that for example the cat took the apple ... but the null hypothesis says theres a chance that it didnt?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes the core idea with stats is all based on probability if we assume the null is true, and we have evidence to back it up, there's still a chance we got the wrong hypothesis

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's what type I and type II errors are all about

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

most likely though, you'll form hypothesis that have numbers attached to them somehow

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

a null hypothesis of "the cat took the apple" is a bit vague and hard to attach numbers to it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so another example the old woman is 45 is the hypothesis so then would she may not be 47 be the null ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you make a guess that she's 45, then your null would be Ho: x = 45 where x is her age The alternative is Ha: x =/= 45

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Basically, she's either 45 or she isn't 45

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh hmm ok if i have another question about it will u come back to this question?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ty
