How many ways can Hannah give 3 of her 8 T-shirts to her younger sister? A. 40,314 B. 120 C. 336 D. 56

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8 choose 3: You've got 8 choices for the first one, 7 for the second, and 6 for the third, but it doesn't matter which of the 3 shirts chosen is first, second, and third, so it's... well, you can do the multiplication and division.

OK, let's imagine you are going through the closet. You have 8 shirts. Any one of them could be the first one you give away. Follow me so far?

yea

Now you have 7 shirts. That's 7 choices, so you multiply that by 8 to know how many options you've had so far. Then you'll have 6 shirts, 6 choices, and you can multiply by that too. However, you've now chosen 3 shirts. There are 3 possible "first" shirts, which leaves 2 possible "second" shirts and only one shirt as the third shirt. We need to divide by 3, 2, and 1 to compensate for this error.
