In point and shoot cameras, you look through the viewfinder and see the field of what you are shooting, but you do not see the image. These types of cameras are typically disposable cameras and old style cameras like Holgas and Dianas. But in SLR cameras, the viewfinder shows you exactly what picture you are taking and allows you to focus the image to your liking. So it is basically more manual styled controls (SLR cameras) versus more automatic controls (point and shoot, hence the name).
